Tips for Moving - #8

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

Tip #8:
Consolidate cleaning supplies
If you must clean your old place after moving out, put together a kit of basic cleaning supplies and rags that will be left behind after your Austin moving company clears out your belongings. Clean anything possible ahead of time (the inside of kitchen cupboards, the oven, windows, etc.), and if possible, vacuum each room as the movers empty it. If you find the job is too overwhelming to tackle yourself try enlisting the help of friends or family. Or, check with your Austin mover to see if they offer a cleaning and make ready service and/or carpet cleaning services in addition to their usual moving services. The mover’s cleaning service may do a more thorough job than a regular maid service at paying specific attention to making sinks, tubs, toilets, showers, surfaces, ceiling fans, and baseboards sparkle! They will also vacuum, mop and remove trash, leaving your old home in tip top shape and ready to become someone’s new home!

Elephant Moving & Storage wishes Austin a safe and successful moving season!

Monday, April 14th, 2008

That’s right, summer is here, and that means moving! Did you know that 70% of all moves take place during the summer months? Elephant Moving would like to wish Austin a safe and successful summer moving season! Here are a few tips to help you get through your summer move:

-As always, be sure that your mover is a licensed moving company that carries the proper insurances. Check with the Texas Department of Transportation (for local moving) and/or the U.S. Dept of Transportation (for interstate moving) to make sure your potential movers are currently licensed.

-Be aware that all movers charge higher rates during the peak season. If you are trying to save money on your move try to move before May or after August to get the lowest rates.

-Summer moving may be your only option (time off work, kids out of school, etc). You will want to shop around and get a few quotes before making your final decision on a mover. If you are moving a house or large apartment get an on-site estimate to ensure you have the most accurate quote and avoid extra charges on moving day.

-As you compare estimates pay careful attention to the services that you will receive for the price. Make sure each moving company has the same information from you (complete item list, location info such as curvy staircase, long carry, steep driveway, elevator, etc). Look carefully at the details of each price quote. How many men will be on your crew? How many trucks will the crew bring? Is disassembly/reassembly of furniture and disconnection/reconnection of appliances included, or is that extra? Will the movers wrap your furniture before moving it to protect against damages, or do they take it as is? Look for the differences between the services included with each mover and choose what’s best for you.

-Remember that cheapest is not always best! Do some research and read reviews on independent local message boards such as Citysearch and Yahoo! Local to find out how your potential mover has been doing at keeping customers happy before, during and after their moves!

Choosing a Long Distance Mover

Saturday, January 12th, 2008

When moving cross country one of the most important decisions you will make is which long distance moving company to use to relocate your home or office. It is imperative that the mover be a licensed and insured interstate moving company. This means that your mover carries all required insurances and is licensed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the United States Department of Transportation as a household goods mover. You can check the registration status of your long distance mover at the FMCSA website.

In order for you to receive a binding price quote your interstate mover will need to do an on-site estimate. If you are being charged by weight you will pay for either the estimated weight of your shipment or for the exact weight plus the cost of taking the truck to a scale to determine the exact weight. If you are being charged by volume you will pay for the space your shipment takes up in the truck; volume is charged by the cubic foot.

Elephant Moving generally charges long distance moves by volume. This method makes it easy to see how much your interstate move will cost without adding to the price by charging for a trip to the scales. Marks or bars in the trucks mark off 100 or 200 cubic foot intervals. As the customer observes the loading he can clearly see how much space his shipment takes up in the truck.

Provide Your Mover with the Best Information

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

One of the most important steps before you move is getting a moving estimate from your home or office mover. In order for the estimator to provide you with the most accurate quote possible you will need to provide him with the best information you can. You should have complete knowledge of your new neighborhood, apartment/house/office, and the route to your destination (including construction). With local moves, time is everything. You can sometimes save time if you can recommend a quicker route to your destination than the one your mover was expecting to take. Other helpful tidbits that your Austin mover needs to know in order to give you an accurate moving estimate:

Check your new area for the availability of suitable parking for the moving truck - one that will allow the movers to comfortably load and unload your items. Double-parking means the truck has to round the corner every so often and you may incur additional charges. A long carry will add to the time it takes to load or unload.
Know all of the restrictions and requirements for your building. Most big buildings, especially in city areas, allow moves only between 9am and 5pm for residenatial moves, or only after hours and weekends for commercial moves. Remind your movers to provide the necessary certificates of insurance. These documents protect the building against damage. Building superintendents will not allow entrance without them. Check what other requirements the building may have regarding floor/wall protection and elevator usage.
• The availability of suitable elevator units for apartment moves is very important, especially ones large enough to hold your biggest pieces of furniture. This will definitely save you time and money. But it will also save the movers the time and effort of carrying heavy furniture up the stairs, where damage is more likely to occur, and also from disassembling your furniture.

If you are unsure about access, parking, or elevator sizes don’t hesitate to request an on-site estimate! Your Austin movers will gladly take a little time to check things out to ensure there are no unpleasant surprises on move day and everything goes smoothly for your move!

Should I Hire a Mover or Do It Myself?

Sunday, April 29th, 2007

When deciding whether to hire a mover or do it yourself, there are a number of factors that should be considered. Obviously hiring a mover costs money. But moving yourself is not as inexpensive as you might think! If you are renting a truck there is the rental fee, insurance and taxes. On top of that there is the cost of gas and mileage. If you are moving locally this is not a major expense, but if you are moving across the state or even further that gas and mileage can add up quickly!

Aside from the cost of the truck there is the problem of loading it. If you live upstairs you need to get all of your things down to the truck (without damaging them!). Once everything is outside it needs to be carefully stacked in the truck to avoid damages. Wood furniture that is stacked on top of one another without any pads or protection between them is going to arrive at its destination full of nicks, scratches, gouges and dents. If the furniture on the bottom is not strong enough to hold the weight of what is above, it may be cracked or broken into pieces. Glass and electronics must be packed carefully to avoid costly damages. The farther you are travelling, the more likely it is that something will be damaged in transit. Once you reach your destination you then need to unload your truck (and are likely exhausted after packing, loading and driving).

Hiring an experienced professional mover can take most of the stress out of moving! Movers get it done faster and more efficiently because it’s their job! Your Austin movers have all the equipment necessary to protect and load even the most fragile items and the experience to stack the truck without damaging your things. There are several crew members (2-6 or more depending on the size of your move) and they work quickly to get you into your new place in just a few hours.

We hear it time and again from our customers: This was the best $ I ever spent!

Choosing Your Austin Mover

Thursday, April 12th, 2007

You will have many choices of household goods movers. Since the prices and services offered vary from mover to mover, you may want to shop around before hiring a mover. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and make sure you get everything in writing, including the company’s full name, address, and telephone number.

Under Texas law, anyone offering to perform a moving service for hire must be registered with the TX Department of Transportation. To verify whether your Austin mover is properly registered, check the status of the mover’s motor carrier registration or contact TxDOT at (800) 299-1700 (select Option 3 from the automated menu). TxDOT can also give information about the mover’s complaint history and annual report. You may also want to contact other sources such as the Better Business Bureau for information.

Elephant Moving Inc is insured and licensed; our TxDOT registration number is 000613531B.
